Everyone knows protein is good for the muscles! It is also one of the biggest discussed topics when it comes to strength training, but do you need it? Before we answer that question, let’s discuss what it is and the benefits it may have.
WHAT IS IT?
Protein powder is one of the most popular supplements and is always being pushed towards gym goers. These powders are powdered forms of protein that come from plants (soybeans, peas, rice, potatoes, or hemp), eggs, or milk (casein or whey protein). Other ingredients may be added to these powders so it is important to know what else you are putting in your body. These powders may have added sugar, vitamins, minerals, and each brand has different protein measurements per serving.
Therefore, if you are currently taking protein it is important to know what ingredients are in the supplement.
There are various benefits of having enough protein in your diet.
Builds and maintain muscle
Helps bone strength
Can reduce body appetite and hunger levels
IS IT NECESSARY?
Purchasing protein powder is NOT necessary to reaching your health and and fitness goals. However, It is recommended to eat .8-1 grams of protein per body weight. You are able to get protein through natural foods such as eggs, yogurt, and meats. There are various other foods you may add to your diet to reach your daily protein intake. However, If you are having trouble reaching your daily protein intake, protein powder can be a great way to help you reach them. Protein powder can be added to smoothies, oatmeal, or baking recipes!
BE AWARE!
Always be careful when adding a new supplement to your diet. A lot of companies are not FDA approved, therefore being careful what you put in your body is important. The consumer has to trust the ingredients the manufacturer puts in the supplement. Especially because certain protein powders may cause digestive distress. For example, if you are lactose intolerant, drinking a powder from a milk source can upset your stomach. If you have allergies, make sure you check the nutrition facts before consuming.
Protein powder can be helpful by assisting you get to your daily protein goals. However, it is not necessary. If you eat enough protein from your diet you do not need protein powder. If you do decide to take protein powder, always make an informed decision before you digest it.
