HOW TO BREATHE PROPERLY DURING SQUATS
Have you ever thought about how you breath during your squats?
YOU SHOULD!
Improving your breathing technique during squats can help you lift more weight and keep you safe!
Adding this 2 step process will allow you to unlock a better squat!
1) Breathe as deep as you can into your stomach through the nasal to create intra-abdominal pressure.
2) Brace your core as hard as you can to create stiffness and rigidity.
Now let’s elaborate a little more on this.
With this deep breathing technique we are going to make sure we are filling up the stomach with air, and not the chest. It is important to use your breath to fill up your diagram because it will allow you to brace and contract your abdominal muscles. This will create intra-abdominal pressure to provide stiffness in your trunk and stabilize your spine. This allows you to express strength and protect yourself from injury. This breathing technique will also force you to use your abs during your squats, making it a true full body exercise!
Now let’s talk about exhaling! We have to make sure we breathe out the mouth. We have to pretend we are exhaling “through a straw” and exhaling slowly. This will allow you to keep that core stiff during your exhale as well. Doing this will help you stay injury-free during your squats!
Let’s go over the breathing steps of the squat!
1) Take a deep nasal inhale filling up your diaphragm
2) Brace your abdominal muscles
3) Squat down
4) Squat up while slowly exhaling through the mouth
